and Resource Centers...
AAP/CCEE’s
primary function will always be to operate as a resource for parents,
youth and the community. We will advocate fair teaching practices, decision-making
policies, and intervention and resolution alternatives for minority youth.
The disparity between non-minority and minority academic standards are
astounding. And as such, require proactive efforts to remedy the negative
and cyclical effects on individuals, families, communities and systems.
AAP/CCEE
offers the following services to assist those in need:
- Mediation
and Intervention:
-
-
Parents
or youth seeking alternative solutions to issues may request mediation
assistance from AAP/CCEE staff.
We coordinate meetings with school representative(s) to amicably
resolve a range of problems. Often, youth and their parents arent
aware of their options (e.g. appeals process, dispute resolution
methods) which may prevent a youth from receiving a negative mark
on their record, or introduce them unnecessarily to the juvenile
system. AAP/CCEE staff members
are familiar with options, students rights, parents
rights, and can present an informed argument and offer alternatives
that uninformed or less experienced negotiators may not be equipped
to offer.
-
Dispute Resolution:
-
AAP/CCEE
is active in preventing our minority youth from being Tagged
and Tracked by the juvenile system. Every disruptive
act does not warrant immediate referral to the juvenile system.
AAP/CCEE is an advocate of
dispute resolution practices. These practices institute fair punishment
(or treatment) for the crime. Some youth may need counseling, and
not necessarily a referral to the police department. School administrators
have a tendency to implement a zero-tolerance rule without adequately
assessing the youths history, and seeking alternative solutions
besides automatic indoctrination into the juvenile system. Statistics
reveal a disproportionate suspension rate for minority students:
with minority students receiving harsher punishment for lesser offenses
than non-minority students. Minority students tend to receive more
days of suspension and non-minority students receive intervention
more often than minority students.
-
Because
AAP/CCEE has a long history
of working with Central Office Administration and school governance,
it has the capability of assisting parents in establishing responsive
partnerships with school administrators, districts, and educators
on various subjects and on different levels. Establishing Parent
Councils, Youth Leadership Institutes, and Positive Policing Activities
will assist parents and the community in creating productive and
responsive partnerships between the residents and the school community.
